One day, Mommy said to Demetrius, "You've been a good boy. Would you like to spend the night at Grandma and PawPaw's house?" Demetrius said, "Yes! I love to go to Grandma and PawPaw's house." Demetrius got his favorite backpack out so Mommy could pack it. He got his pajamas, robe and slippers from his bedroom for Mommy. She said, "Demetrius, you will need your toothbrush, too." So Demetrius got his toothbrush from the bathroom. Mommy put it in his backpack and added some clothes for the next day. She told Demetrius to get his favorite blanket and his favorite stuffed animal to take also. Then they loaded up the car and drove to Grandma and PawPaw's house. It wasn't far and Demetrius was very excited. He jumped out of the car and ran up to the door. He rang the doorbell many times until PawPaw finally opened it. Grandma and PawPaw were happy to see Demetrius and hugged him. PawPaw took his backpack and said bye to Mommy. "We will see you tomorrow!" they said and Demetrius gave Mommy a big hug and kiss.
Demetrius told PawPaw he was hungry so PawPaw opened the fridge to see what they had to eat. Grandma said, "Let's have hot dogs and corn chips? And you can help me bake chocolate chip cookies for dessert." Demetrius thought that was a good idea. So Grandma got out some cookie sheets. She let Demetrius spoon some cookie dough out of a big container she had. She let him help her put them in the oven. They set the timer and then fixed hot dogs in the microwave oven. When the timer went off, Grandma got the hot cookies from the oven. By the time they were cool enough to eat, they had eaten their hot dogs and chips and were ready for dessert. The cookies were really good and they ate almost all of them while drinking big glasses cold milk.
Then Grandma said, "Do you want to take a bath?" Demetrius said, "Yes, please. Can I have lots of bubbles and play with my toys in the bathtub?" Grandma said, "Sure. You get your toys and I will start the water." Demetrius took off his clothes and got in the tub with all his toys - boats, little toy men, small cars and little dinosaurs. Grandma sat on the side of the tub and played too. Demetrius played until the water got cold and Grandma said it was time to get out. She dried Demetrius with a big beach towel and PawPaw put his pajamas on him. Demetrius put his own robe and slippers on. PawPaw said, "Would you like some popcorn and a story before you go to bed?" Demetrius said, "Yes please." PawPaw made some popcorn while Demetrius looked in the bookcase for a book to read. He chose one about a monkey and ate a bowl of popcorn while PawPaw read it to him. When he was done, PawPaw said, "Now it's time to brush your teeth and go to bed." So Demetrius brushed his teeth while PawPaw made up his bed. He got Demetrius's special pillow, blanket and stuffed animal. Demetrius laid down and went fast asleep.
When he woke up the next morning he saw that Grandma and PawPaw were already awake. They said, "How would you like to go out to eat breakfast?" Demetrius thought that was a good idea. So he hurried to dress himself. Grandma and PawPaw put him in his carseat and drove him to the restaurant. Demetrius ordered pancakes and chocolate milk, his favorite breakfast. He ate every bite. The waitress told him what a good boy he was and she gave him a special lollipop as a treat.
Demetrius wanted to go home then so Grandma and PawPaw took him back to his home. Mommy and Daddy were waiting on him. They were very glad to see him. He hugged Grandma and PawPaw. They told him he could come back and stay with them anytime. Demetrius said he would like that.

Demetrius Does The Mountain
One day Uncle Ben said to Demetrius, "You've been a good boy. Would you like to go for a ride up the mountain?" Demetrius said, "Yes! I love the mountain." So Uncle Ben put Demetrius in his carseat and loaded up his Jeep for the ride up the mountain. It was a beautiful day with blue skies and very few clouds that looked like fluffy cotton.
Uncle Ben found the road to the mountain. It was a dirt road hardly anyone uses. It was very bumpy and they went very slow. It had a nice babbling brook running along the side. In some places you could stop and look over the side of the road. One place you could look down at the trees below you. In another you could look out over the whole valley below. Demetrius felt very big looking down on everything.
Uncle Ben found a picnic area deep in the woods. He and Demetrius got the picnic basket that Mommy packed out of the car. They saw animals track in the clearing. They tried to guess what kind of animal made those tracks. Maybe a bear. Or maybe a deer. Or maybe a coyote. They didn't know for sure but all those animals lived on the mountain.
They sat at the picnic table and ate their lunch. They had fried chicken, potato chips, hard-boiled eggs and pink lemonade. While they were eating, they heard schreeching overhead. When they looked up they saw two red-tailed hawks in the clear blue sky above them. It seem like they were doing a flying dance just for Demetrius and his Uncle Ben.
When they were finished eating, Demetrius helped Uncle Ben pick up all the litter and take it back to the car. "We don't want to attract more bears, if that is what those tracks are" said Uncle Ben.
They got back into the car and continued driving up the mountain road. Demetrius saw lots of trees, mostly aspen and pine. Many rocks had fallen along the side of the road. He asked Uncle Ben if he could bring a rock home with him. Uncle Ben stopped the Jeep and they got out and picked a nice big one to take back. Demetrius ran towards Uncle Ben with a little rock in his hand. He stumbled and fell down on the ground skinning his knee. Demetrius started to cry but Uncle Ben picked him up. He took him back to the Jeep where he put some antiseptic and a bandage on Demetrius's knee. He told him he was lucky he fell on the rocks and not over the side of the mountain.
They loaded themselves and the rocks in the car and headed back up the mountain. One more curve and they were finally at the top. They parked in the big parking lot and walked up the path to the crest of the mountain. Once they got there, they could see for miles and miles. There was a whole city down below them. "That's where we came from" Uncle Ben said. Demetrius thought he could see his house but everything looked so small from up here. He looked across the path and could see many antennas on top of the mountain. Uncle Ben told him he could see those from his house but Demetrius thought he could only see them with binoculars. "I will let you look when we get home", said Uncle Ben.
Uncle Ben said it was time to go. Demetrius was very tired and didn't argue. It was a long way up the mountain and another long ride back home.

Demetrius Does The Beach
One day, Daddy said to Demetrius, "You've been a good boy. Would you like to go to the beach?" Demetrius said, "Yes! I like the beach."
So Daddy loaded up the car, put Demetrius in his carseat and drove to the beach. It was a long drive and Demetrius took a nap. When he woke up, they were at the beach.
Daddy found a nice spot to set up the umbrella and spread out the blanket. Daddy brought sunscreen and put it all over Demetrius even though he didn't like it. "It will protect you from the harmful rays of the sun," Daddy said.
Demetrius thought the white sand felt good on his feet. He got out his shovel and started digging in the sand. He pretended he was building a house. Then he pretended he was looking for treasure. He was a superhero and protecting all the people. He even made a city with streets to run his cars on.
Demetrius wanted to go into the water so Daddy put a lifejacket on him. "The water can be dangerous for someone who can't swim well," Daddy said. Demetrius ran in and out of the waves. One of them caught him by surprise and knocked him over. He got water in his eyes, nose and mouth. He was surprised that it was salty. "It tastes funny!", he told his Daddy.
Demetrius was hungry so Daddy got lunch from the cooler. They had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, potato chips, apple slices and juice. The seagulls must have heard them chewing because they came from nowhere, screeching and flying around, trying to get a bite. Demetrius wanted to feed them but Daddy pointed out the sign that said "Please Do Not Feed The Birds!"
After lunch Demetrius and Daddy went for a long walk down the beach. They found lots of seashells to take home. They even found a sanddollar. Daddy pointed out the ships on the horizen and the sailboats closer in. Demetrius said he wished he could ride on a boat. Daddy said, "Maybe someday you can."
Before they finished their walk, Daddy could see the clouds starting to build into a storm. He told Demetrius that they might have to leave soon. Demetrius didn't want this day to end. They heard thunder and Daddy picked up all their things to put them in the car. "If you hear thunder, then there is lightning close by. We don't want to be on the beach in a storm."
Demetrius could still feel the earlier sunshine on his face and hear the sound of the waves as they drove away. He was tired and he drifted off to sleep. Demetrius will always have this memory of his day at the beach.

Demetrius Does Soccer Camp
One day Daddy said to Demetrius, "You've been a good boy and you're growing bigger. How would you like to go to soccer camp?" Demetrius was excited at first but then he was a little afraid since he really didn't know what soccer was. Daddy told him it was a game played all around the world and called 'football' everywhere but here in the United States. You use a round ball a little smaller than a basketball. You don't use your hands or catch the ball. Mostly you kick it with your feet or bounce it off your head and other parts of your body. The object is to get the ball into a goal at one end of the field. If you can do that, you get one point. Daddy said Demetrius would have fun learning how to play and told him it was very easy.
Daddy took Demetrius to the sports store where they bought some equipment: shin pads and special shoes with traction on the bottom. They bought special socks and a soccer ball just his size. Demetrius tried them all on when he got home and couldn't wait for soccer camp to start.
Finally the day arrived. Mommy helped Demetrius put on his new soccer gear. It felt strange but really protected his shins when Mommy tested them. She brought lots of water and some orange slices to the camp because she knew that Demetrius would be thirsty while he learned to play soccer.
They arrived at the park and there were some tents set up with lots of children gathered around them. Then four young men in blue shirts and shorts came and introduced themselves. They were Coach Chris, Coach Jamie, Coach Alex and Coach Scott. They reminded Demetrius of his Daddy or his Uncle Ben except that they all talked differently than Daddy or Uncle Ben. Mommy told him they were from England, a country very far away, where they all played soccer on different teams. They were really good at soccer and they were here to help all the children learn how to play. Demetrius liked the way they talked.
Coach Jamie said that he and Coach Scott would be Demetrius's coaches for the week. There were eleven other new soccer players in Demetrius's group. All of them were 3 or 4 years old and like Demetrius, they didn't know a lot about soccer. So the coaches taught them some basic soccer skills. They taught them when they said a number what to do - like "Number one is run, run, run!" or "Number four - roll on the floor!" or "Number seven - head it to heaven!"
It was a lot of fun. Mommy and Daddy got to play too. But it was hot and thirsty work. Demetrius drank a lot when the coaches gave them a little break.
One day they heard thunder and it started raining. The coaches said they should go home and come back the next day when the weather was better. No one should play outside when they hear thunder because there could also be lightning in the area.
On the last day at the end of the week, the coaches had a surprise for them. They gave each soccer player a special soccer shirt and a new soccer ball to practice with. Then they gave each player a certificate saying they had completed the First Kicks Soccer Camp. Demetrius was very proud and couldn't wait to practice his newfound soccer skills with Mommy and Daddy and Uncle Ben.
