One day Uncle Ben said to Demetrius, "You've been a good boy. Would you like to go for a ride up the mountain?" Demetrius said, "Yes! I love the mountain." So Uncle Ben put Demetrius in his carseat and loaded up his Jeep for the ride up the mountain. It was a beautiful day with blue skies and very few clouds that looked like fluffy cotton.
Uncle Ben found the road to the mountain. It was a dirt road hardly anyone uses. It was very bumpy and they went very slow. It had a nice babbling brook running along the side. In some places you could stop and look over the side of the road. One place you could look down at the trees below you. In another you could look out over the whole valley below. Demetrius felt very big looking down on everything.
Uncle Ben found a picnic area deep in the woods. He and Demetrius got the picnic basket that Mommy packed out of the car. They saw animals track in the clearing. They tried to guess what kind of animal made those tracks. Maybe a bear. Or maybe a deer. Or maybe a coyote. They didn't know for sure but all those animals lived on the mountain.
They sat at the picnic table and ate their lunch. They had fried chicken, potato chips, hard-boiled eggs and pink lemonade. While they were eating, they heard schreeching overhead. When they looked up they saw two red-tailed hawks in the clear blue sky above them. It seem like they were doing a flying dance just for Demetrius and his Uncle Ben.
When they were finished eating, Demetrius helped Uncle Ben pick up all the litter and take it back to the car. "We don't want to attract more bears, if that is what those tracks are" said Uncle Ben.
They got back into the car and continued driving up the mountain road. Demetrius saw lots of trees, mostly aspen and pine. Many rocks had fallen along the side of the road. He asked Uncle Ben if he could bring a rock home with him. Uncle Ben stopped the Jeep and they got out and picked a nice big one to take back. Demetrius ran towards Uncle Ben with a little rock in his hand. He stumbled and fell down on the ground skinning his knee. Demetrius started to cry but Uncle Ben picked him up. He took him back to the Jeep where he put some antiseptic and a bandage on Demetrius's knee. He told him he was lucky he fell on the rocks and not over the side of the mountain.
They loaded themselves and the rocks in the car and headed back up the mountain. One more curve and they were finally at the top. They parked in the big parking lot and walked up the path to the crest of the mountain. Once they got there, they could see for miles and miles. There was a whole city down below them. "That's where we came from" Uncle Ben said. Demetrius thought he could see his house but everything looked so small from up here. He looked across the path and could see many antennas on top of the mountain. Uncle Ben told him he could see those from his house but Demetrius thought he could only see them with binoculars. "I will let you look when we get home", said Uncle Ben.
Uncle Ben said it was time to go. Demetrius was very tired and didn't argue. It was a long way up the mountain and another long ride back home.
