Demetrius Does The Beach

One day, Daddy said to Demetrius, "You've been a good boy. Would you like to go to the beach?" Demetrius said, "Yes! I like the beach."
So Daddy loaded up the car, put Demetrius in his carseat and drove to the beach. It was a long drive and Demetrius took a nap. When he woke up, they were at the beach.
Daddy found a nice spot to set up the umbrella and spread out the blanket. Daddy brought sunscreen and put it all over Demetrius even though he didn't like it. "It will protect you from the harmful rays of the sun," Daddy said.
Demetrius thought the white sand felt good on his feet. He got out his shovel and started digging in the sand. He pretended he was building a house. Then he pretended he was looking for treasure. He was a superhero and protecting all the people. He even made a city with streets to run his cars on.
Demetrius wanted to go into the water so Daddy put a lifejacket on him. "The water can be dangerous for someone who can't swim well," Daddy said. Demetrius ran in and out of the waves. One of them caught him by surprise and knocked him over. He got water in his eyes, nose and mouth. He was surprised that it was salty. "It tastes funny!", he told his Daddy.
Demetrius was hungry so Daddy got lunch from the cooler. They had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, potato chips, apple slices and juice. The seagulls must have heard them chewing because they came from nowhere, screeching and flying around, trying to get a bite. Demetrius wanted to feed them but Daddy pointed out the sign that said "Please Do Not Feed The Birds!"
After lunch Demetrius and Daddy went for a long walk down the beach. They found lots of seashells to take home. They even found a sanddollar. Daddy pointed out the ships on the horizen and the sailboats closer in. Demetrius said he wished he could ride on a boat. Daddy said, "Maybe someday you can."
Before they finished their walk, Daddy could see the clouds starting to build into a storm. He told Demetrius that they might have to leave soon. Demetrius didn't want this day to end. They heard thunder and Daddy picked up all their things to put them in the car. "If you hear thunder, then there is lightning close by. We don't want to be on the beach in a storm."
Demetrius could still feel the earlier sunshine on his face and hear the sound of the waves as they drove away. He was tired and he drifted off to sleep. Demetrius will always have this memory of his day at the beach.
